Top Tips for Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom Outfits
I may be biased but for my Brother's Wedding day, one of the best dressed females was certainly my Mummy! As Mother of the Groom, it can be a daunting prospect knowing that after the Bride and her Mother of corse, all eyes will be then be on your outfit. So in order to ensure that she was suitably dressed to impress for the occasion, my Mum enlisted my help as her Personal Stylist and I think that the outfit we picked together looked absolutely beautiful.
Mum has stunning blue eyes and striking silver hair so this Dress and matching Jacket from Fenn Wright Manson in John Lewis really compliments her features and skin tone. The top half of the dress has silver and blue embroidery which adds a subtle detailing to the outfit and the fit of the matching jacket shows this off perfectly. She wanted her look to be smart but comfortable and wearable for the whole day into the evening. The outfit is accessorised with an understated fascinator from Debut at Debenhams and Dusky Pink Suede Stiletto Sandals from Marks and Spencer.
When selecting an outfit as Mother of the Bride or Groom, here are my tops styling tips to consider:
1. Colour
The first thing to consider is what would be the most suitable colour for your outfit. As Mother of the Bride or Groom, like it or not you are a VERY important person at a wedding! What better excuse is there to dress to impress! It is really important the outfits for the Mother of the Bride or Groom compliment, but are not the same as the Bridesmaids, the colour scheme of the wedding, or eachother for that matter! For this particular wedding the colour scheme was a deep royal blue and so knowing this beforehand helped to ensure that there were no colour clashes (which would not make for the best of family photographs now would they!) It is a great excuse for the Mother's of the Bride and Groom to get together to discuss their outfit thoughts and ideas as it builds their relationship and they can get excited about their siblings' special day together.
2. Shape and Style
Go for a style that is slightly out of your comfort zone, but always ensure that the shape of the dress suits your bodyshape. For example, this dress from Fenn Wright Manson is perfect if you have wide hips and a small waist as it is cut to create an hourglass figure. The detailing at the top gives the illusion of a bigger bust which balances proportions. Having a matching jacket that compliments the dress is an ideal way to complete the look and can hide the tops of arms which are usually a part of the body that us ladies like to cover up!
3. Length
Length is also an important consideration and in general for a Mother of the Bride or Groom anything that sits on or below the knee is the best option to go for to ensure that you ooze class and elegance.
4. Accessories
Weddings are the perfect occasion to accessorise more than you would normally, but do so with caution! There is a danger of over-accessorising at weddings and I am a firm believer in 'less is more' when it comes to styling. When selecting a Mother of the Groom outfit it is worth asking the Mother of the Bride whether she is wearing a hat or not. For this particular wedding, the Mother of the Bride chose not to wear a hat but to wear a fascinator. Therefore, it felt appropriate for Mum as Mother of the Groom to also opt for a fascinator rather than a hat. She chose a colour to match her heels which I think looks really chic and understated, without being 'matchy-matchy'.
I think Mum looks fabulous even if I do say so myself! I was really proud of her on the day as she was super confident, which I definitely believe started with feeling great in her outfit as Mother of the Groom.
